Craftsmen in Japan and all over the world continue to appreciate the fine qualities of Chiba Artisan Tools. They are still produced by hand, in traditional blacksmith studios that ring with the sound of daily hammering!
The Boso Peninsula is the distinctive geographical feature of the Chiba Prefecture, which lies directly to the South and East of Tokyo. Iron manufacture and blacksmithing have been practiced there for centuries, and saw rapid growth during the Edo Period (1603-1868), when the demand for agricultural development and urban construction increased.
Later, in the Meiji period (1868-1912), it became thriving to manufacture tools forartisans working in the pastoral farming and the textile industries. By 1874, the first domestically-produced Western-style scissors had been manufactured in Chiba,
and the distribution of these and the distinctive short-handled ‘Tobi Suzume’ sickles throughout Japan and overseas, established Chiba Prefecture as an important producer of artisan tools.
In 2017, the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry officially designated Chiba Artisan Tools as a traditional craft.
